Strategies To Enhance Memory
Forgetfulness is neither a sign of age or memory loss, it is a natural phenomenon
experienced by all ages however, not so much by children as by adults. Although children experience memory loss it
is usually forgetting something they were told to do or something that did not have much meaning to them.
Children’s minds are not cluttered with a lot of things so they can remember things for longer periods of time
(especially those promises we make). As adults our mind is cluttered with work, children, our mate, the house, the
bills and so many other commitments and responsibilities. When you try to think of more too many things at once you
are bound to forget something. Like what you just walked into a room for. In many cases what we consider memory
loss is just poor concentration.
In some instances we do actually forget something, i.e. the name of a person we just recently met and saw again
but could not use their name in conversation. Some people remember names and others remember numbers. But it is
embarrassing to forget a person’s name.
It is easier to exercise your brain to enhance memory than it is to exercise your body to enhance strength. To
enhance memory get a hobby that will take concentration on a project for a period of time regularly (embroidery,
knitting, woodworking, etc.). Playing games such as crossword either in the newspaper, a game book or online. Jig
saw puzzles do not just keep your mind working but the also enhance hand, eye coordination.
Your brain needs to get out of a rut also. By changing your routine you will enhance not just memory but you
will exercise your brain by making it think about how to do something difference, for instance: if you are left
handed than spend one day doing everything you normally do with your right hand instead. Your brain will have to
shift gears to accommodate this change. Change the route you usually take to work if you drive, or walk down a
different street to your transportation. These activities will wake you brain up and it will wake up all of the
muscles needed to perform these changes. You will also feel a change for the better when you perform these
changes.
Read a book or read the newspaper to enhance your memory. Discussing what you read with someone is a great way
to remember. Our brains need exercise as much as our bodies do, so give your brain a good workout.
your brain by doing something different from your ordinary routine such as eating: if you are right handed spend
a day eating with your left hand. It will wake up your brain and all the muscles you haven’t used in a long time.
Just as when we do not exercise our bodies our muscles tend to go to sleep because they are not needed, our brain
too slows down many functions because we just don’t use them. Remember the old adage “use it or lose it?” It
applies here. As adults we tend to get in a rut with our day-to-day routine and then worry because we cannot
remember.
